I can only reply to the second part of your question, but I'd say:
"Yeah, that's about right". .jpg files are *already* compressed, and
1-2% is the most you gain through zipping them. The two pages of text
might amount to, say, 20k-30k. Two pages of .jpg's may well be a
megabyte or two. As the zip utility "sees" it, that homework assignment
is overwhelmingly pictures, so as I said: 2% overall for that package
sounds about right.
