I can only reply to the second part of your question, but I'd say:
"Yeah, that's about right". .jpg files are *already* compressed, and
1-2% is the most you gain through zipping them. The two pages of text
might amount to, say, 20k-30k. Two pages of .jpg's may well be a
megabyte or two. As the zip utility "sees" it, that homework assignment
is overwhelmingly pictures, so as I said: 2% overall for that package
sounds about right.

I just searched and came up with the recent
thread on the XP BRU.
I will be migrating soon, and have adopted the habit
in 98se of using ACDSee as my windows explorer
because of the ability to rename bulk files with a continuum
using a Hatch controller.

If I have a file named say "Part Number 123456"
in ACDSee I can select 450 files say, hit F2
and type in "Part Number 1234##" and place 57 as my
beginning number in the rename sequence.
ACDSee will then rename the 450 files continuing on
from 123457.

I wonder if BRU offers anything similar?

my son's homework file in MSWord, and the file
will only zip 2%, which seemed strange with 2 pages of text
and two of *.jpg images, does this sound "ball park"?

What's BRU? Irfanview (free 3rd party software will do that) Noing like
that in XP.

The problem is that your jpgs are aready compressed and also comprise
the lions share of the file contents, therefor little additional
compression.

First - BRU... I see you mean "Bulk Rename Utility" <-- third party thing?

I used to utilize a shareware program called RenameWiz... Great application:

Then I found a true freeware called "ReNamer" and now I use it:
http://www.den4b.com/projects.php

For photos - I use Picasa to organize into albums - even upload to a 1GB web
album (free) that I am considering upgrading to more for a little money each
year.

JPG images are already compressed and pure text files - the best you will do
is remove 'spaces'. heh

I don't want to come across as a smart arse,
but try selecting a dummy set of say 12 images
or perhaps 12 folders.

Highlight them all, hit F2

Type in a name like "Bob" then enter
the folders will be renamed Bob1, bob2 etc.

Not that it is what I wanted, I'll stay with ACDSee
where I can use wildcards in the renaming option.

but really refers to a third party software

You're welcome. Not a problem. Unless you get into writing batch files
or are willing to accept Bob, Bob (1), Bob (2), Bob (3).......... as the
results (not pretty), you will need 3rd party.
