W2K/SP4
Firefox, DUN

I rarely install a freeware utility, so my machine is normally trouble-
free. The only MS program I use is the OS, else is freeware. I do not
believe this is a patch issue as I have run in a fairly unpatched
situation on many machines for years with no issues, due to careful
browsing.

In a recent week, I had installed nothing, there was (AFAIK) no
excitement at all on my hard drive. I shut down after cleaning, each
evening.

The next morning, went online, started browsing as usual, after an hour,
it stopped browsing. DUN properties were normal, connection was normal,
same Firefox version I've used for 6 months. I rebooted, normal again for
rest of day. From then on, each day, part of the day it would not browse
to my normal sites. I have another XP machine, it browsed normally at
basically the same time of day. I established it was not an ISP issue, it
was my machine.

I finally went back to a one month-old registry and started over. That
worked fine for the past 2 weeks, but this AM the problem started again.
I browsed for 10 minutes normally, then it could not find any website.
The sites I go to are my normal ones, so the firewall is not suddenly
blocking them. I use the default host, don't edit it.

I tried the following:
- checked DUN properties, they all are normal

- disable the firewall

- ran ispfix utility

- ran winsock fix utility, it said no change as everything was normal.

Except troubleshooting above, I ran no host utilities or winsock
effecting utilities.

Advice?

Mike

This is my wife's computer with a failing battery, so the time of posting
is wrong.

This AM, it is working again. A hidden problem is still a problem, so
hope to get some advice on troubleshooting.
