Browsing My Computer slow down (reading slow CD-rom or network drives)

Whenever I have a Dialogue Box to open or save files, it always takes a
long time for all the drives to appear in "My Computer". At first I
thought this was because I had a CD-ROM in the drive which took a while
to read but I don't. I do have a network drive attached but I don't
want to remove it.

Isn't there a way to disable reading the root contents of each drive
when the contents of "My Computer" are displayed? I just want to see
the drive letters, and THEN for windows to read the root contents AFTER
I click on a drive.

If anyone has answers to this, I would be very interested and grateful.
