browsing folders slow in xp

My win xp is ok, no spyware no virus
recently deframented, however browsing
floders take some secs, you double click
any folder and takes some secs, then content appears,
I guess something is not ok.
512 mb should be enough in a 1,8 mhz with some 30%
free ram to open folders fast.

any ideas about how to improve that?
