Somehow I picked up the browserdirect.net annoyance. After
googling "browserdirect.net" I found advice to check
Add/Remove programs for "new.net"--and there it was. I
removed it.

I'm usually extremely careful about this sort of thing. Any
ideas on how could it have gotten into my machine?
