Browser Works but Other Internet Programs do not. Help!

On my TabletPC running WindowsXP SP2, I can connect and get IE and
Firefox to work just fine. If I go to use another program that
requires internet access (IM's, RSS, Groove, etc) I can not get them to
work unless I use a proxy (now using Privoxy w/ Tor).

Anyone know what is going on here and how I can fix it to allow me to
connect to the Net without the need for a proxy.

This happens with or without a firewall and/or router...strait pipe or
not.
