Browser links in XP

Links to websites won't work from my email or messenger
programs ever since i installed and uninstalled AOL 8. I
haven't been able to successfully re-download Internet
Explorer with the hopes that reinstalling it might help.
Would it? Any suggestions? I don't see AOL in any of my
property settings. Someone said to edit the registry -
but that scares me! Thanks for any help!
