I can connect to my employer's network with a VPN connection from home, but
can't see any shared files or anything on their network, or even the network
itself in My Network Places. Shouldn't I be able to see something?
Thanks,
David

No, you can't browse across a routed connection. If they use WINS, you can
try configuring your IP config to use the WINS server IP...if not, you can
also try using an LMHOSTS file for name resolution if you can't browse.

You cannot encapsulate NetBIOS over TCP/IP through a VPN?

Not through a VPN client (that I've ever seen) - only through a site-to-site
VPN via two routers.
