I've had this Brother MFC for a while, and lately whenever it prints it
makes a loud clicking sound. I can't figure out what it is, or how to
fix it. Has anyone else had this experience?

Is this a Laser or Inkjet MFC?
The model number would help also.

It's ink, MFC8500. Also, it has always said "Change Drum Soon" in the
display, for years now, even with a brand new one.

If it is an MFC 210 mine did the same thing. I got fed up with the
problems with it and it is waiting by the door to go to donation box and
I have a nice new HP All in One that I am very happy with.

The MFC8500 is a laser printer, it uses toner rather than ink.

Firstly I suspect that the drum counter was not reset when the drum was changed.
You can do this as follows.
1. Open the front cover.
2. Press the Clear key.
3. Press 1 to reset.
4. Close the front cover.
This should remove the "change drum soon" message but won't fix the clicking.

Does the clicking happen as you turn on the printer or only when printing?
If you have an old drum unit see if the noise happens with that unit.

That worked to clear the replace drum message.
The clicking only happens when printing. We don't have an old drum, I
think this started happening with a new drum, maybe it's just slightly
defective.

I think you are right, if it does not happen when you turn the printer on
(during initialisation) but happens when printing then I think the drum is the
problem.
If you can get it replaced then all well and good, otherwise if you can put up
with the noise it will not damage the printer.
