Brother Laser Printer problem - why do drums die ?

Hi,

I have a Brother Laser Printer which has suddenly started producing
very black prints. The text is still readable, but what should be
white on the page is stained black, and what should be black is really
solid black !

I have given the internals a good clean all over - corona wire, drum,
sponges etc. No discernible difference after the clean.

My first question is - is this what happens when a drum reaches the
end of its lifetime ? I can't believe it would happen so suddenly....

Second question is - why are drums consumables ? I thought I knew how
LP's work but I can't explain what part of the drum is going to wear
out. Is it the efficiency of the corona wires, perhaps ?

It's bugging me that I could buy a new drum for a lot of money, only
to find that the printer itself is knackered, and I have no way of
testing that without going through and doing it !

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tim

I know the problem. What to do.

A few weeks ago I bought a new drum and soon after bought a high yield toner
spending £100+ and last week the printer went terminal. So decided to by a
new HP1300 as the old one was always a compromise (PagePro 1100L) slow speed
poor solids and photos. But I was able to give my consumables to my daughter
so not all wasted. Very annoying though.
