But it now continues to run on the start-up cycle, instead of shutting
off after a few seconds. Drum light steady, ready light flashing about 1
sec interval. Drum changed, no difference.

Does anyone have thoughts on the problem?

Jack
The printer does not know that the drum unit has been replaced. Did you by
chance remove the mylar sheet from the new drum before you put the drum unit in
the printer, if so that would cause the problem.
You can try a generic drum reset which works with many of the HL series.
Open the cover, press and hold the button until all of the lights come on,
release the button.
