Can someone interpret this error for me and if possible, tell me how
to prevent it ? This message is in the log on my win2K, standalone,
server (no domain, just workgroup). The system it is trying to
receive a list of servers from (XYB in the message below) is actually
a client. There are no other servers on the network.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: BROWSER
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8021
Date: 2/26/2004
Time: 9:26:58 AM
User: N/A
Computer: XYZ
Description:
The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser
master \\XYB on the network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{CEC3DECC-8E34-4C95-

Thanks,

That's the XYZ machine

Not that I've noticed. I did see a network drive drop out and then
reconnect itself recently when working on XYB.

They are all win2K. How do I disable the Master Browser ?

what o/s is XYB running?
what is the name of the standalone server that is displaying the error?
do u have any problems browsing the network from any machines?
looks like something is blocking the stand alone server from getting network
info from XYB.

if this is a workgroup:
then leave the master browser service enabled on a machine that is always
on. (e.g the standalone server)
and turn of the master browser on all other machines.

if all machines on the network are w2k:
then disable master browser on all machines as w2k used DNS to find
resourses on the network.

Hello,

You do not need to have the computer browser service running in order to
browse. The computer browser server allows the computer to take place in
the browser election. Browsing is always based off of WINS and/or
broadcasts. You can set the domain master (which by default should be the
domain controller) to always win the browser election by a registry setting.

hklm\system\ccs\services\browser\parameters and set "isdomainmaster" to
"true" and "maintainserverlist" to "yes". To disable you can set this to
"false".
