hi,

when i modify the default theme for my website by perhaps just changing the
'body' font(or anything at all), and save it giving it a new name, i end up
getting a long list of 'broken links' all pointing to various theme files. i
don't know of any hyperlinks to these files so i don't even know where to
begin to repair them.

anyway, if i change the theme back to the original default, or an entirely
new theme, the broken links all go away.

any ideas why this is happening? everything seems to work fine, but i'm
just kind of concerned about the broken link messages.

You need to edit the theme and then save it with a new name.
Then apply your new theme to your web.
