Yes, my computer is being an annoyance - AGAIN!

If it weren't for that VistaXP theme that I downloaded, I wouldn't have to
put up with this.

Okay, I won't rant. Here is my problem. I click on something, access denied.
Download something, access denied. In fact, every single thing I do, ACCESS
DENIED! It is annoying! I booted in to safe mode just before I posted this
just so I can set file permissions. I set permissions for the *entire* hard
drive, yet I still don't have access. I can't use system restore because I
didn't create a restore point. Maybe it was because I made changes to the
Folder file type.

Whatever it is, please tell me how to fix this problem ASAP!

Thank you in advance!

John.

You downloaded something from somewhere and now your computer doesn't
work. Then you made some changes to file types and permissions. There is
no way for us to know what you actually did.

First make sure you didn't infect your computer with a virus. The normal
steps are to run virus/malware scanning software.

If you can't run anything from your own machine (and most certainly you
should try first), then you can:

1. Slave the hard drive in another machine running XP and scan from there;
2. Or boot with a Bart's PE or other rescue CD that you've made that has
antivirus plugins and scan with that.

Once you have determined that the machine is clean, do a Repair Install.

How-To

If the Repair Install doesn't work, then whatever you did (and I suspect
there was more to it than simply clicking on "something" and that you
set permissions incorrectly on top of that), back up your data and
clean-install Windows.

What you will need on-hand

You can back up your data even if you can't get into Windows by either
slaving the drive in a working machine (or putting it into a USB drive
enclosure) or booting with a rescue CD such as Knoppix or a Bart's PE.
