my modem is connected through usb , would it be quicker
if i connected with a ethernet cable

No, either would work fine, wether USB or (cat 5) cable

Hi,
Ethernet's Advantages:
1) Liberates 1 (scarce?) USB port.
2) Allows Hardware ROUTER/Switch to be installed between Modem and PC for
small home network (sharing connection) and/or sharing printer in same.

Ethernet...
Uses fewer resources *and* it frees up a USB port!

Addendum 2:

Hardware firewall is NAT (Natural Address Translation). Limited as
firewalls go but still better than the software firewalls.
