"Currently, 85 per cent of people in Britain get speeds of 2 mbps or above – the average speed is above 4 mbps. In the most remote rural areas, the figure is 82 per cent. The Digital Britain report recommended that £200 million of public money be made available to the industry to make the 2mbps minimum a universal offering. At BT, we think that the sums involved are pretty tight, but workable. We are developing services to improve access to broadband in remote areas, and testing a technology that provides up to 2mbps to people who get poor service because of their distance from the exchange. This is a better solution than alternatives like satellite and mobile broadband.
