Bringing USB devices through Remote Desktop

Our software package is running at a client's site. We have a RDP connection
to a WinXP Pro PC inside their LAN.

Now we need to scan documents here using our software on the remote site.
How do I get RDP to bring the scanner through the connection? The scanner is
connected on the local machine, the checkbox for bringing along serial ports
is checked in the Options area of RDP, but our software at the remote site
doesn't see the scanner here.

Help!

Install scanning software locally, scan locally, access scanned file
remotely.

Ok, maybe I wasn't clear...

I will be doing the scanning locally, the scanned images are to be stored
remotely. And the software package driving the process (assocates the
scanned image to the account we're in at that time) is on the remote computer.

So the software on the remote computer needs to be able to see the scanner
on the local PC. We have "bring serial ports" option checked, but it doesn't
seem to be bringing the scanner across the RDP connection.

Ok then... What are my options?

Are the serial ports brought along? Would putting a USB to Serial adapter
on the scanner work? Or is there third party software out there that
addresses this issue?

I have some emails out to possible third parties, but if anyone knows of one
that works, passing on that knowledge would be appreciated!
