BRING BACK SPRUCE, BRING BACK SPRUCE, BRING BACK SPRUCE, BRING BACK SPRUCE,
BRING BACK SPRUCE, BRING BACK SPRUCE, BRING BACK SPRUCE, BRING BACK SPRUCE,

I have Win XP running on my machine with automatic upgrades from Microsoft
enabled. A couple of days ago the machine downloaded an update and I
foolishly installed it via the little shield on the toolbar.

This made a complete mess of my desktop, setting the appearance of programs
to a mucky pink colour which I hate and I can not get it back to what it
was, a nice gentle green colour which was called Spruce. Other changes to
the desktop occurred. All this happened without any warning.
I am not a happy bunny :-((((((((((((((((((((((((

Desktop -> appearance -> Windows classic style -> Spruce
was a nice gentle green, and now is a mucky gray.

BRING BACK SPRUCE,BRING BACK SPRUCE,BRING BACK SPRUCE,BRING BACK SPRUCE,

Not only that, a major function of Internet Explorer has been deleted.
I use a Dial Up Line and before when IE was launched and the machine was
not connected to the Internet a prompt to dial my ISP appeared. This
function has been deleted and when IE is launched a "Page can not be
Displayed" warning appears and I have to work around the problem with
start -> connect to.

How do I get my machine back to what it was?

Dave Fawthrop <dave hyphenologist co uk> Google Groups is IME the *worst*
method of accessing usenet. GG subscribers would be well advised get a
newsreader, say Agent, and a newsserver, say news.individual.net. These
will allow them: to see only *new* posts, a killfile, and other goodies.

What's with the all caps? Not needed and it doesn't help get your problem
any more help. Do a system restore to before the update. Go to Start |
Help and Restore and choose system restore from the menu line.

You might want to think about not using automatic updates. Turn them off
and then visit the windows update site twice of month or so, to see what is
being offered. Most of the security patches come out once a month on the
second Tuesday.
