A relative tinkered with my settings, and now the display is dark. I've
tried using Adobe Gamma to lighten things, and that works -- but only until I
turn the computer off. When I restart, the display is dark again. What can
I do?

This is at least the third place you've multiposted this. You got quite
a few answers in the first thread. Go back to that thread and work with
the posters who are trying to help you there.

Have you asked the relative what they did? If you want to supply that
information, do it in the original thread.
