i installed a 160gb hardrive and my system recognized 137
gb in the bios , so i installed windows xp then the
service pack one.. now in my disk manager it has 127gb
partitioned, and has 24gb unallocated..

what do i do with the 24 unalocated? i right clicked on
the 24 unallocated and then picked new partition but when
i get to the next prompt it says i have two choices to
pick either a primary partition or an extended partion.
what one do i pick i dont know the difference?

is there any trick or tweak to get the partition to see
all the gigabites instead of it spliting them into two?
can i trick the bios to see the whole thing or set my
bios in my drive options and set the thing to the whole
160gb?

there are two articles in microsoft knowledge base i
noticed one is...
''How to Enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing Support
for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows XP
This article was previously published under Q303013'' do
i do this process and do i do it before or after i do the
thing in the disk management .

i read another article "The ATAPI driver for Windows XP
Service Pack 1 (SP1) does not use 48-bit Logical Block
Addressing (LBA) when it writes memory dump files or
hibernation files. Additionally, the flush cache command
is not issued to a large hard disk that has 48-bit LBA
enabled when Windows XP enters standby or hibernation''
This article was previously published under Q331958 .

do i need to put in the fix for that as well?

thanks

To set it as one partition you need to enable the 48 bit LBA.

Limitations aren't always due to the operating system and what service pack
you have installed. Check the documentation for your motherboard. What is
the largest hard drive the BIOS can handle.
