A left and right bracket have appeared in my document and will not delete or
cut. Is this some kind of formatting tool? I turned the show/hide off and
they are still there. They do not show up in print preview. That is good,
but I want them to go away. Help.

You may have display of bookmarks turned on. Look at Tools > Options > View.
If the "Bookmarks" box is checked, uncheck it.
