Ok, what If I have a hard drive crash?
I have no XP setup CD
I have a PC with a Windows XP home sticker on it, can I get a CD mailed
to me?

When they have problems with their machines at Ferguson, an support
person comes around and reinstalls the software using either the
corporate network, or I guess an image.
The company I got this from has no idea what I would do if it crashes.
I suppose I could buy a usb drive and copy the whole partition over.

Sounds like you will need to make an image backup as you mention. Don't
forget to use a backup program that can make a bootable CD or even bootable
USB drive(Problematic).

The XP installation you have is an OEM, all you have to do is get hold
of a OEM XP Installation CD, and use it to install the O/S, and use
your Product key that came with the machine.

yes, but see you cant just go out and get one without buying it. And I
dont know anyone I could borrow from, besides discs go down at very
inconvenient times.
I might as well just buy XP home in that case.
I do have access to XP pro, but I wanted to not cheat and keep this PC
legal and genuine.
If anyone needs the XP software license key that is on their machine
they can run Belarc Advisor which is free and gives you all sorts of
information. Very nice little program.
I think what I will end up doing is buying an ide drive and mirroring
the partition. I dont like doing this because you will just copy errors
if they exist. But as far as I know, right now everything is ok. I am
used to buying a computer and always getting an install CD for the OS,
but from what I understand, corporate license PC when sold dont have
these. So others must be in a similar position.

What they should have is a site at HP that you enter your machine model
and serial number and for 5$ they will send you a legal copy of the OS
that came with the machine when new.

It sounds more like you bought just the machine, and not an operating system
to go with it. If that's the corporate's software, then you have no license
to use it. They'll either hvae to give it to you, or you'll have to go out
and buy it.

Yes, you could image the drive but you still wouldn't own a license for the
operating system and you will have problems with updates and such. Much
better to get a legal license so the future goes smoothly.

Call HP and ask. They are the responsible ones.

It is a legal copy of the OS. That was made clear to me when I got the
computer.
I have no problems with updates and Microsoft verifies it as genuine,
you know they have that test you can run.

Not legal to "sell" copies of volume licenses. SO, ask the seller for
the "legal CD and key", and you will be all set.
