I have had Vista now for a few months and everything has been fine, until now!
After Vista had installed some updates and I restarted my computer both my
DVD-ROM´s disappeared. I can see them in the Device Manager and have tried
uninstalling them and reinstalling but nothing seems to work! It says int the
Device Manager that it cant read the drivers and the drives may be damage
(CODE 39)
What should I do? Would be grateful for some solutions!

rona,

The following link may provide a solution. Follow the instructions on the
following Microsoft article to remove upper and lower filters:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

Sometimes this solution works, but who knows until you try it. Some
burner programs, such as Nero and/or iTunes/iPod have been known to cause the
problem you're having. Note in the Microsoft article that you may need to
reinstall a burner program, if that's what's causing the problem. Post back
on the results.

Amazing. This problem has been in Windows since Windows 95 -- i.e.,
ever since the Registry was a part of the OS! MS operating systems are
STILL losing drives because of it in 2007?!? Someone in Redmond is
getting terribly overpaid. It's criminal that Vista still falls prey to
Registry entries inserted by 3rd-party programs after all these years.
It's utterly ridiculous that Vista isn't "hardwired" to find and delete
these entries if their existence prevents the OS from seeing optical
drives. TWELVE years and MS STILL cannot find a way around this ancient
problem? Sample Message Box: "Windows Vista has deleted improper
Registry entries that prevent the use of your optical drives. If
programs controlling those drives fail to work properly, please
reinstall or upgrade them."

This is just another in a long, long list of reasons why such respected
and inveterate Windows authorities as Scott Finnie are actually
switching to Macs for their lower total cost of ownership.
