Both my DVD/RW and DVD/Rom drives have disappeared from My Computer and
cannot be found in Explorer and are inoperable. They are listed in Device
Manager but with Yellow Exclamation Points over them. I have tried to reload
the drivers (in Device Manager) without success. The last thing I was doing
on the computer was trying to reinstall the HP DVD software programs because
it had been acting up. I uninstalled the old HP DVD software and did a fresh
reinstall of everything on the disk. It didn't work so I tried the process
again. Now neither my HP DVD-RW or LiteON DVD-ROM are listed in My Computer
and neither work.

Can someone help me please. Thank you. Mike

Hello,

This link may help
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/
(You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31)

Hi Mike - See here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];270008 It may not
sound like it applies but take the steps outlined there to delete the Upper
and Lower Filters.

You can also use this reg file to handle these deletes (it takes care of
deleting some other things which can cause problems as well):
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip This is
pretty much the "standard" fix for this type of issue. Backup first so that
you can recover if there are problems (there aren't usually, BTW).

It's recommended by Compaq/HP that you run FilterFixer also when this occurs
to recreate the correct entries, here:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp2...00/sp27949.exe Instructions
here: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp2...00/sp27949.txt

Thanks to both of you. Removing the two items in the registry and rebooting
got my DVD drives to display in My Computer. Now I need to see if I run into
the same problem when I reload my DVD software.
