I have an old cd drive and a new dvd drive which were both working fine, now
I can get either of them to open. There is a green light shown on one so I
assume the power is getting through. I went into BIOS and enabled the
peripherals and saved and exited. Still no good. Can anybody help me as I
am now completely lost. Could it be due to windows updates as these are the
only new software on my pc for a long time?

With the computer turned off and unplugged, open the case and reseat the
ribbon cables and power supply connectors going to the drives. Start
the computer and test. If the drives still do not work, remove
connections to both drives and test one drive at a time. Your power
supply may be going and/or the old cd drive may have failed. The only
way to test is methodically, swapping out parts, etc.

If you are uncomfortable working inside your computer, don't have a lot
of knowledge, and/or don't have extra parts lying around to swap in and
out, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your
local version of BigStoreUSA).
