Can I tweak my computer so it bootsup/shutsdown faster?
I have got a 2.66 GHz Intel Celeron cpu with 480mb of ram. Windows XP
Service Pack 2
Thanks,
Jeff

Not really tweaks, but for Shutdown/Restart you might want to get
the XP Add-on Service called User Hive Profile Cleanup. As to a
quicker startup that really depends on what 3rd-party apps/drivers
must be loaded. One thing to consider is check the System Event
log and make sure no errors happen during system startup. To do
that it's best to clear the log and then immediately reboot. The log
will now show events from the boot cycle.
User Profile Hive Cleanup:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

To access the Event log:
Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]

The only other item is to check what Startup & Watchdog entries
are being run. The best tool for that is SysInternals AutoRuns:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys.../Autoruns.mspx
*Changing Startups has the potential to break things so make sure
the items you de-select aren't critical to the PC working properly.

My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how long it
takes to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is
otherwise satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about. Most
people start their computers once a day or even less frequently. In
the overall scheme of things, even a few minutes to start up isn't
very important. Personally I power on my computer when I get up in the
morning, then go get my coffee. When I come back, it's done booting. I
don't know how long it took to boot and I don't care.

However if you do want to address it, it may be because of what
programs start automatically, and you may want to stop some of them
from starting that way. On each program you don't want to start
automatically, check its Options to see if it has the choice not to
start (make sure you actually choose the option not to run it, not
just a "don't show icon" option). Many can easily and best be stopped
that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run
line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to
start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of
running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell
you, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs
you run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but
others have no effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do
is determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what
the cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can get
more information about these at
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it there,
try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

Well here is what I did. I bought a Western Digital 10,000 RPM hard drive.
This is 39% faster than a 7,200 RPM drive so already I'm booting 39% faster.
AutoCAD 2008 took 44 seconds to load the first time after rebooting, it now
takes 20 seconds.

Worked for me, Rich

Simply because the rotational speed of your HD is 39% faster does in no way
make the boot up 39% faster.

It can be much faster if you use standby and hibernate.

Yes your right of course, but it is faster and the buffer size is larger
than the old drive too maybe that's why the start of Acad is faster than a
39% gain?

Correct away, Rich

Sure. Disable all the background applications you have set to run on
bootup.
