How long is the boot sector in XP MCE? I long into the recovery console
and it asks if I want to write a whole new boot sector. I know the mbr is
512 bytes but what about the whole boot sect.

It depends on the file system being used, the operating system itself
won't make any difference on the actual size of the boot sector. Can
you normally boot to the Windows installation?
