Booting problems following Blaster patch download

I recently downloaded the patch for the Blaster virus onto
my home PC.
Now the PC will not boot. It gets as far as the Welcome to
Windows XP screen, then shuts down and restarts
automatically without getting any further.

This cycle keeps repeating, and I can't get access to my
desktop.

Any suggestions?
