After installing a new DVD burner in my comp. it will no longer start.
I have an ASUS A7V motherboard, with an AMD Thunderbird 800mhz
processor.
Everything gets power, fans, hdd's, etc start up, and the mobo light
comes on.There are no POST beeps, and I get no signal from the
videocard to my monitor.
I'm assuming the CPU or the motherboard is the problem.
Removing the video card makes no difference, but if I remove the RAM I
get POST beeps.
This is what confuses me, obviously it does some of the POST routine,
since it notices the RAM missing, does this mean that the
BIOS/motherboard is ok and the CPU is the problem?

All help greatly appreciated...

Then disconnect the DVD-burner again. Does it now start ?

The problem is definitely not CPU or motherboard. It is most likely a
question of bad jumpering of dvd.

The A7v has 2 controllers. A promise (the best) and another one. That
is 4 IDE ports and 8 drives can be connected.

On each cable one master and one slave is allowed.

I appreciate you taking the time to help John, but obviously the DVD
burner is not the problem. Yes, I've disconnected it, but IDE devices
are not initialized until much later in the boot-up sequence. The fact
that it doesn't even get to the point where a signal is sent to the
monitor, should indicate that the problem is with the CPU or
motherboard.
I need a way to find out which one causes the problem though... Don't
have access to another CPU to try either... Oh, I've also reset the
CMOS, but it didn't help.

In most cases, problems that arise after doing something are usually
caused by that something that you just did. I'd suspect the either DVD
burner or something that you moved or disconnected. I suggest removing
the burner and trying again. If no luck, check and double check the
connections on anything close to the burner. Floppy drive power
connections are easy to jar loose. They are also easy to install upside
down - this could cause the problem you describe.

If worked before you installed the DVD then the problem is either the
DVD mis configured, bent broke, broken what have you or something you
inadvertly pulled apart, broke, or disconnected. THEY AIN'T NO OTHER
CHOICES.
