What excatly are startup scripts and why do they take a
long time(like 20-45 minutes to run before windows
desktop comes up? I have several pcs that do this.

They can perform just about any imaginable task. Ask your systems admin what
is running and why.

Patrick is probably correct but you might also find out *what* is really taking so long to give control to the Desktop. Are you loading some big apps like Exchange, etc? Setting up databases? or maybe it's a network related problem trying to find a disk link that no longer exists.
