After "Turn off Computer" I cannot restart from the computer button, but...if
I put a disk in the D drive it will bring up my computer and load. Yes, I
have done F8 on Restart to start normally> WIN XP Home Ed.

Hiya,

Once, I saw this error caused by having the Boot Hard Drive in BIOS set to HDD1 (the 2nd drive) instead of HDD0 (the
first drive). So, it needs the boot files, and finds them on D:, then continues with C: where the rest of the OS was.

May not be your problem, but check that.

Please describe what you see when the failed boot stops.

Is the disk you put in the CD drive your Windows XP CD?

Have you looked in the System Log at the Error / Warning Reports in
Event Viewer relating to the last failed boot?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Gramma:
If I correctly understand you, right now your PC (it's a desktop machine?)
is in continual hibernation mode and you're loathe to power off for fear
you'll not be able to power on again. Particularly so since you have much to
do on the computer during this Christmas season. Do I have this right?

1. First of all, are you reasonably sure that if you now powered off your PC
and then restarted the machine that the same scenario you described would
occur? After you first experienced the problem that the machine would shut
down shortly after powering up unless you were able to insert your XP
installation CD, did this happen time & time again? You tried a normal
powering up & booting operation a number of times? But the problem kept on
returning?

2. If you simply press your power button in a normal manner, the system will
not power on? It's necessary to press & hold the power button for about 8
seconds and only then will the system begin powering up sometime during
those 8 seconds? And you say that if you do nothing further re inserting a
CD, the machine will power off? Do I have this right?

3. So you say that in order for the system to go through the boot process
it's necessary for you to install a bootable CD such as the XP installation
CD? The CD must be a bootable one?

4. What happens then? Obviously you don't want to boot to an XP setup
routine. Are you saying that as long as the XP installation CD is inserted
you can boot to a Desktop and your machine will function normally from then
on? During a boot operation with your XP installation CD inserted, you
normally get the message about pressing any key if you want to boot to the
XP setup operation. You get that message? And you simply bypass it and the
system boots to a Desktop?

5. Do you have any clue as to why this problem surfaced? Did you make any
software/hardware changes just prior to the problem occurring? No problems
at all with your PC just prior to this problem?

6. Did you try a System Restore along the way back to a point prior to the
time you experienced this problem?

This could either be a hardware or a software problem, possibly involving
the computer's power supply but it's impossible to tell (at least to me!) at
this point based upon your description (up to now) of the problem. Perhaps
you can explain the problem with a bit more clarity & details about the
hardware you're working with and we can go on from there if you want.

I think we need to see what is said in your boot.ini file.

To see your boot.ini file you may need to make sure that you can
see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files
and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files"
is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item.
You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for
known file types" is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make
sure View, Details is selected and then select View, Choose Details
and check before Name, Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

Next access Windows Explorer by double clicking the My Computer
icon on your Desktop. Place the cursor on your C drive. Find and
double click the boot.ini file and it will open. Next place the cursor
anywhere in the body of text in the file and select Edit, Select All,
which
will highlight all the text in the file. Select Edit, Copy and close the
file.

Finally paste the text from your Clipboard ( edit, copy will have put
the
text in your Clipboard) in a further message to us here.

It is important that you do not make any changes to the content of
the boot.ini file as the file is crucial to the process of starting your
computer.

Hope this helps.

Everything worked down to: "...click My Computer icon; place cursor on C
drive; find boot.ini file.." Boot.ini" was not there. Ony 2 shared file
folders (Shared docs and Mary's Docs); then Hard Disk Drive was Local Disk C,
Disk Tot 74.5GB, Free 6l.l GB; and A,D & E Removable.
So I did "Search" and came up with: [boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
That was one of 3 items shown in Search. Does this help you?

Gramma

In Windows Explorer try searching My Computer for boot.ini.
Before starting the search, after entering the search criteria
boot.ini,.select Advanced Options and click on the box before
Search System Folders, Search Hidden Files and Folders
and Search Sub-Folders. On which drive does it show your
boot.ini file. It may be your C drive as not selecting the Advanced
Option may mean it was concealed when you searched before.

You have found what appears to be the content of the boot.ini
but I would like to be sure I know where it is.

Another task, Select Start, Control, Panel, Administrative
Tools, Computer, Management, Disk Management. For your
all drives please tell me what appears in the
Status column.

BTW I am a Grandad <g>.

Hope this helps.
