i have just tried to reinstall windows xp. half way through a message
came up saying it couldn't copy a file. i am now stuck in the middle
of the install with no way of finishing it. i can't start my computer
up at all. i tried putting another bootable disc in but for some
reason my computer won't boot from it. i tried the disc in another
computer and it worked. does anyone have any suggestions as to what i
can do here?

many thanks,

mitch

When you say half way through, do you mean half way through the installation
process or half way through copying the temp files to the hard drive which
it does at the beginning. If the latter then try checking the disk for any
damage or marks (even finger marks) give the disk a gentle wipe with a soft
cloth, centre to outer edge not round in a circle.

no it's half way through the installation process...

the disc works fine on other computers, but my computer won't read any
cds now and all it does is get into the installation and then restart
because a file cannot be found and the repeats the process...

Sounds like possibly a faulty drive then. If you are able to check all the
cables are fitted correctly try taking out the memory and plugging it back
in again, if that doesn't help I'd try another optical drive.
