Booting and vertical stripes problem with Service Pack 2 / X64

I'm aware that most Service Pack 2 problems were discussed and resolved
long ago, but I'm having a very hard time finding a solution to this
one. However, I didn't have this problem on my previous PC, yet I do
on my current one, which is why I'm (rather embarrassedly) asking this
now.

After installing Service Pack 2 (via Windows Update), Windows hangs
while booting up, usually with a very garbled loading bar. If I use
safe mode, I can get past the boot screen, however the whole screen is
garbled with vertical lines which distort when using the mouse, which
renders everything near-unseeable. Luckily I was able to navigate my
way around to uninstall the service pack, and the problem went away.
However, I really do need to use Service Pack 2, and I'd be grateful if
anyone could help me solve this problem.

Also, exactly the same problem happens when installing X64 in an empty
partition, are these problems related?

If it helps, I have an Athlon 64 3200 processor, an Radeon 9800XT
graphics card and 1gb of RAM.

Again, any help at all would be appreciated, and I apologise if I'm
echoing already-resolved problems.

I would try a fresh download of SP2; the original download may have had
corruption. Also, install any updated drivers for the Radeon card
before reinstalling SP2. It certainly looks like a GDI problem.
