A friend just reformatted her hard drive on a Windows XP computer after
discovering that the reason it would not boot was because it was infected
with a virus.

Does anyone know if you can create a bootable CD-ROM which you could then
use to scan your computer and (hopefully) remove the viruses?

BartPE - specifically - look into the Windows Ultimate Boot CD. It'll do
what you want and much more. I don't believe any computer tech who will be
troubleshooting regular users' computers should be without an Ultimate Boot
CD and a Windows Ultimate Boot CD. ;-)

Several anti-virus systems delivered as a RETAIL CD sold in a box nay already
have the CD as the bootable CD.

And, if you selected a downloadable version, some offer a CD (usually
bootable) as a backup at an additional charge. This may or may not come in
a pretty retail boxed version.
