I have a GigaByte 8IRXP with ULTRA133 Promise 20276 controller.

I have installed XP Pro connected at the standard IDE channel and than I
have installed gigabyte ata drivers hoping to move the drive on the ata
channel.

But simply moving the cable I can't boot, so using
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;305595 I have
prepared a floppy.

boot.ini:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Windows XP"

Whith the floppy I can boot XP, and I have no special drivers no the floppy.
On the hd I have the same boot.ini, but after cd-boot, rescue console,
fixmbr and fixboot, I can't boot from hd.
I can see some strage characters appearing on the screen and then it
freezes.

Can someone help me?

Thanks,
Matteo

I'm puzzled as to why you installed first on the std ide instead of on the
cntrlr.?
If yr bios is set to boot frm cd you can boot frm the installation disk.
Ensure you have the Promise drivers on a floppy, boot frm the xp
installation disk and opt for a repair install, at some point you will see a
msg re installing third party drivers, hit the appropriate key and insert
the floppy
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html may assist.

He, he, I was thinking it was so simple!
But, with hd connected at the cntlr, at the first reboot (the half
installation one or even the repair one), after providing apropriate
Promise drivers un floppy with F6, the machine hangs, "dirting" the
console with some coloured chars, faces and so on.

That's why I have prepared the floppy I can boot with... but why I can't
boot from HD?

I have used fixmbr and fixboot with no positive effect... is there some
other magic utilities that can help me?

Thanks,
Matteo

I've seen posts on this error, 'odd charactors' at the mo. cannot remember
the cause.

Sounds like something isn't properly seated in your system or a poor
connection. If it were me I would remove the controler card and then
reinstall (in a different PCI slot if possible), get a new data cable (or at
least a different one)connect it and try a different power lead from your
power supply if available.

FWIW,
