I started up computer and windows could not start file missing or corrupt
\windows\system32\config\system. I followed instructions on manual to start
boot from cdrom first, installed disc#1 labeled recovery disc, then replace
MBR completed window came up, then another error window came up saying open
image file error, I acknowledged and everything repeated over again. Is the
recovery disc bad? Can anyone help?

You probably need to restore your System registry hive with a manual System
Restore: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545.

Luis, if you have a Recovery Disk and it may somehow become corrupt
contact the Manufacturer of the Computer ie Dell, HP etc. You can go to
their website and under Support
look for more info there. Without the Recovery Disk which has a fresh
copy or image of your system you might have to get a retail version of XP.

My computer only came with three recovery discs labeled #1, #2 and #3, it did
not come with an OS disc, it does have an authenticity sticker on the
computer with the key on it. When I installed the recovery disk it came up
with error window saying open image file error. could it be the disc is bad?

Yes, your recovery disk could be bad or your CD drive could be marginal. To
boot into Repair Console you could ask a friend to give you a copy of a
WinXP installation CD.
