Hello perrykerrang,

Thank you for your post, but please note the following:

This newsgroup is available for you to post issues and questions about the
use of the Windows Defender.

You can use it to collaborate directly with Microsoft Support Professionals,
Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs) and other community members to
get answers.

Your question would be better addressed to the Vista General newsgroup where
you will get a better audience for your query.

I hope this post is helpful, but we would highly appreciate it if you could
rate the pºst, so we can keep the community informed and saves somebody else
the hours of trawling through the web trying to find a solution.

Keep trying. I can't test with Vista 'til I get into work tomorrow--My
Vista laptop lives at work at the moment, but what I've read is this:

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#03

See the Vista section.

I'd choose hard disk, and then hold down the F8 function key again.-

FYI

I don't have any problem with Vista Home Premium going to safe mode with the
F-8

I look here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...76cba1033.mspx

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...ef5a71033.mspx

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...354a81033.mspx

http://search.microsoft.com/results....ista+safe+mode

but nothing describe the situation of the OP.

Your problem has nothing to do with Vista. The BIOS used for your
motherboard uses F8 to modify the boot device order. It's an issue of
timing. If you press F8 after the BIOS, then you will enter safe mode.
Bill's suggestion was very good. You might want to look at Superantispyware
(superantispyware.com). It provides a utility when you install
Superantispyware called Bootsafe. I haven't tried it with Vista, but it
sure beats pressing F8. Have a good one!

Agreed--the reason Engel didn't find anything that looked like perrykerrang
had posted is that it is manufacturer-specific (I can't say I've ever seen
it either!)

Regardless, once stuff that might be specific to a vendor is done, the
standard boot sequence has to commence.

Particularly if you use a wireless keyboard with your notebook as I do at
home. Being absent minded I forget to select F8 from the notebook - result?
No safe mode (or BIOS access for that matter), as the device drivers for the
wireless keyboard load too late in the boot sequence to have any effect.
