Sometimes [ ~20%] my XP Pro SP1 system hangs at the first Windows screen.
If I try Safe Mode it will also hang [ at .....mup.sys].

Have tried both reboot methods i.e. via reset and with the power switch off
and on again but it still fails.

It's an ATX chassis/PSU and the motherboard is fairly new and I've noticed
that it has a LED permanently on even when the front panel power switch is
off.
If I completely remove the AC input from the machine it reboots with no
problem.

Any ideas please.

TIA
Jon

That is the point at which all files are loaded, and the system is
initialising. Troubles there usually indicate a hardware problem -
unlikely to be drivers if it is in Safe Mode as well, with just basic
drivers.

An ATX pack always has AC power on it, to run the software startup when
you push the power button. It sounds to me like a faulty pack though if
it boots after AC is disconnected
