I have reinstalled my xp mce and there doesn't seem to be a boot.ini
file in existance. How do I create one?

It's there, just hidden by the "Default View" of explorer. You need to
make changes to the view so Hidden, System & File types are shown.
Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View (TAB) - start at Hidden Files
and Folders and following two option fields.

Check to make certain that you can see 'Hidden files and Folders'.

Open Windows Explorer
Select 'Tools' option in the menu bar.
From the list select 'Folder options'.
In the 'Folder Options' window click on the 'View' tab.
In the 'Advanced settings' box, 'Files and Folders' options,
under 'Hidden files and folders' select 'Show hidden files and folders'.
Now click the 'Apply' button located in the lower right corner.
Then click the 'OK' button. Close Windows Explorer.

Now once again open Windows Explorer and navigate to the
Administrator account and see if the files you are looking for are
now displayed.

I opened the DOS window and ran attrib. No invisible boot.ini was there.
ntldr and ntdetect were there though.

Use DiskMgmt.Msc to locate the Disk _/Partition that is marked as
"System" in the Status column. This should be your Active Partition
with the Boot.Ini file.

Xp won't start without a boot.ini, so it is there. Go to Control
Panel>System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery Settings.
If you click Edit in System startup, Notepad will open with
the boot.ini file. If you select Edit>Save as, the path should
be shown. Select All files as the type, and boot.ini should
show in the file list window.

On thing to note, is that if you are dual booting with the OSs
on separate hard drives, the copy of boot.ini used for starting
XP will be in the root directory of the boot disk. For instance,
if you are dual booting XP and Vista, with Vista being the boot
disk, the boot.ini used will be on the Vista disk.

Is it causing you any problems? Contrary to popular beliefs Windows
2000 and Windows XP can be booted without a boot.ini file.

If you don't say "find hidden files too" to the XP search function you
will never find boot.ini, because it's a hidden file.
