HI,

I have a computer that just will not boot and i am unsure whether to call it
a hardware problem or a configuartion problem but i've tried all i could
think of.

now here is what happened. I recently tried putting service pack 2 on the
computer after repairing the windows installation using my disc. When i went
to restart the computer it did not want to reboot. I've tried repairing the
installation and it would freeze during the part where windows has to restart
the computer. so i backed up all his stuff and tried to reinstall windows xp
completely. but the install would not complete it would freeze after
restarting the computer to continue the installation.

So i installed it using a working computer and it installed perfectly.
Booted and ran properly. no problems. i put the drive back into the problem
computer and it wont boot still. it will get to the support page where you
can choose to run in safe mode. I've tried all the modes and it will freeze
just as windows begins to load or will blue screen out with the following
error:

--
when my computer fails all hell breaks loose.

sorry i accidently posted early...

the error displayed is: stop: 0x0000007b
(0x0f7c47640,0x0c0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

I've tried setting bios to default setting although the processor shows up
at a very low MHz speed, and often shows up as unknown cpu type, the cpu is
supposed to be a amd athlon mobile 2400. i have not removed the heatsink and
fan to check the chip because i have no heatsink paste. The motherboard and
chip are socket 462 (socket a).

The boot hard drive works in another computer. but has not booted since
failure in the one it needs to be in. I have tried moving hard drives around
and even having just the one boot drive plugged in and i get nothing. He's
got three hard drive and one cd-rom and i think they all have windows xp on
them, the 2 other drives i think have corrupted windows installations.

I don;t know where to go from here can someone please help. if you are
confused or need more info please ask i will be happy to give more info.

I've already been to this site and after looking it over it has not helped.
I've reformatted the entire harddrive like 3 times. how can there be issues.
this computer has worked before with this harddrive. I'm thinking that maybe
the bios is corrupt or there is a virus in the bios or something that is not
on a harddrive disk.

0x7b errors usually mean that Windows cannot communicate with the drive
controller, usually that is because it doesn't have the proper
controller drivers. If you have a SATA/RAID controller you have to put
the controller drivers on a floppy diskette and when the installation
starts you have to press F6 to have the setup program load the drivers.
Pay close attention to the prompts at the bottom of the screen, you
will be prompted to press F6 to install Mass Storage Device... if you
miss the prompt and press F6 too late you will have to reboot and start
the installation process again.

I fixed it. turns out the cd-rom was somehow causing problems with the
windows installation. and i'm guessing windows would'nt boot on this computer
because i used a different computer to install windows on the drive. my dad
said to try and replace the cd-rom. and it worked just fine. odd. well thanks
for the help anyways.
