Boot failure and auto restart when connected to network

Recently if I boot laptop with network cable connected,
Win2k makes it through boot up to the login screen, then
fails, dumps and tries to reboot. Doesn't allow log in.
Continues to do this until I disconnect cable.
Disconnecting network allows complete boot up. If you
connect network cable after boot, and enable network
connection everything is fine. Reloaded NIC device drivers
and no change in problem. This is a recent problem. Only
software changes are regular windows updates or a Mcafee
virus dat file updates. Anyone have ideas. Thanks.
