my c drive reportedit was unable to load hive files, and will no
longer boot. as soon as the PC opens the Windows XP spash screen the
PC restarts POST
So I removed the drive and put into a docking station on another PC I
was able to access the drive.
I created an ISO image (using xxclone) of the drive then
I ran ChkDsk and WD diqgnostics on it. errors were found and repaired
by Chkdsk,
The drive is OK according to WD diagnostics, so I guess I will reuse
the drive.
When reinstalled it into the orginal PC and I am getting the message
asking to install a boot drive.
So I guess I need to reinstall Windows.
My questions are:
Am I right about doing a reinstall?

Are there any system files on the clone drive I could possibly use to
re-establish my original environment? I have not tried to boot using
the clone drive I created, and xxclone offered some options presented
after I created the iso relating to MBR which I did not understand so
I did not perform. I suppose I could re-open the program and the drive
and invoke them now.
thanks

In your place I would do this only if WD Diags also tested for viruses
and malware (and reported malware free, and only I were confident
beforehand such scans were reliable.)

Boot from your XP cd

and from the repair console issue the command fixboot
and/or fixmbr

I appreciate the replies
I failed to mention that I had already run fxmbr
the drive has been scanned for malware and viruses, but not since it
stopped booting. I can scan it while it is still in the docking
station
thanks
