boot disk and MS RAM Drive

When I inserted boot disk and boot from the disk. It will show MS RAM Drive.
I don't know what is that. I had a very old computer 80836, and I inserted
windows 98 boot disk, and still able to boot from the disk. any ideas?
Because I thought boot disk should only work in the specific OS. For
example, windows 98 boot disk can only put in win98 machine. and windows
2000 boot disk put in win2000 machine.
