a friend of mine went to boot up his computer and
redeived the error "boot disc failur, please insert disc
and hit enter" he is this but still received the same
error, what is this and what can he do to fix it?

Ensure there is no floppy disk in the floppy disk drive.

If there is no floppy disk in the drive, it's possible that the hard drive
has failed - although the usual error in that case is 'operating system not
found'.
