Somehow the boot message are being displayed during bootup after the welcome
screen. Also during shutdown. How is this turned on and off? WinXP Pro SP2

How To Enable Verbose Startup, Shutdown, Logon, and Logoff Status Messages

Who would have known about the group policy editor? gpedit.msc and all that
is available there.
