I'm using Windows XP Home SP2, and I want to try some Live-CD on my
system once in a while.
In order not to deliberately slow down the boot speed, I would rather
let the boot priority set to HDD as the first boot device.
Is there any possibility to boot from CD anyhow in given cases, e. g.
by pressing some sort of key during the boot process, like Mac OS X is
able to (apple+c stroke)?

This would be a function of your computer's BIOS.
I normally leave the boot order as:

Removable devices
CD
Hard drive

....I don't see any boot speed problems when booting normally to the HD, as I
don't leave anything else inserted to boot from, unless I want to boot from
them.

Check the options of your system's BIOS. You may already have the ability to
select your startup device via your system's
BIOS.

I have an AMIBIOS (American Megatrends) which offers an optional menu that is
selected by pressing the F11 key during startup . The submenu allows one to
select which device to boot from.

I'm told that the Phoenix Award BIOS utilizes the F9 key for this option.

Many systems do; in my case it's the F10 key.

Well, thanks a lot so far for your replies!
I forgot to mention in my first posting that I'm working with a
Samsung notebook with a Phoenix BIOS, dated 11/02/05.
Maybe someone can specify their expert's tips on that?!
I was hoping to find some overview of the use of the F-keys during
boot-up in the net but there was none ... Know any source?
I still have to try the proposed F9 key ...
