Hello,

I am attempting to install the Windows side of Boot Camp on an Intel-based
iMac.

The Apple/Mac side runs fine, and it does everything that I need it to do.
I downloaded

and installed every available software and firmware update from "Software
Update", until

I received the message, "There are no available updates for your computer,
your

software is up to date".

The Apple OS is OSX Leopard v. 10.5.6. The hard drive is 147 GB, and I have
no trouble

partitioning the hard drive into any two sizes.

The problem that I am having occurs during the Windows setup program. After
I partition

the drive on the Apple/Mac side, insert the Windows XP Pro XP2 disk into the
CD slot, and

select "Start Installation", the computer re-starts, as it is supposed to.
The Windows

Setup program begins, as it is supposed to, and it loads all of its default
drivers that

are typically loaded during any Windows installation.

The problem begins after all of the drivers and other files are loaded, and
the "Welcome to Setup"

screen appears. The options are, all by keystrokes (no mouse is available
at this point):

1) To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

2) To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

3) To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Of course, I attempt to press ENTER; nothing happens. Nor does anything
happen when I

press R, or F3; in fact, I tried pressing every single key, and none of them
prompt

any response.

This occurs on two brand-new iMacs, that were taken fresh out of their boxes.

Steps that I have attempted to remedy this problem:


-I have attempted partitioning the drive two times, into different sizes;
the first time,

I partitioned it evenly (a default choice); another time, I partitioned it,
manually, into

about 64GB and 80GB.

-I tried two different XP Pro SP2 installation disks.

-I tried two different (Apple) keyboards, first the plastic one that came
packed with the

computer, second an Aluminum keyboard from another Apple computer.

Can anyone offer me any insight, as to where I could look for a solution

for this problem?

1. Make sure that the XP install disks you are using are full retail ones.
Upgrade disks will not work nor will branded OEM disks (such as ones from
Dell for ex.).

2. Make sure you format the drive NTFS again from within the Windows XP
installation routine. The fact that you've formatted it on the Mac side
doesn't matter. Do not change the partition, however.

3. If you are using a full retail XP install disk and formatting correctly
as above, contact Apple tech support. You must be doing something wrong but
I don't know what. I've installed XP SP2 on numerous Macs using Boot Camp
with no problems such as you describe.

2) I cannot get as far as being able to format NTFS; the problem occurs
before that option is available to me.

3) I spent an hour on the phone with the Apple people, and they are stumped,
also.

Sorry, I know you're doing something wrong but without being able to see
what you're doing I can't help further. Probably calling in a local
computer tech who is skilled with Macs would be your best course of action.

It would appear that the XP install program isn't seeing your keyboard.
I'm assuming it's a USB keyboard.
I know absolutely NOTHING about an Apple computer, but if it were an
industry standard Intel rig I'd boot into BIOS setup and ensure that the USB
keyboard was handled by BIOS.

hi, ken !!!
i hv gone in for a MacBook pro 15.4 & all i had to do is run the boot
aplication from the apple/mac side . ( typing "boot" in the search option &
running the application) i partitioned the HDD to split half ( in my case it
split 116GB x 2 ) .... the installation of the WinVista Ultimate was breeze
... asking to format etc..etc.... i then installed the BOOTCAMP DVD given in
the box, after the Vista was installed .. ( neither of the discs mention that
on the top ) but installing the "OS" dvd, installs the BOOT CAMP & makes an
icon on the task bar next to the time.
my system is working perectly .. ( except for still getting the compatible &
apple nul driver errors .. )

Okay, your problem might be that you are not installing Windows on the
correct partition of your hard drive. You need to make sure that you are
installing to the partition called C: Partition3 <BOOTCAMP> [FAT32].

Hi Ken,

Hopefully you are partitioning the drive using Boot Camp. Because the
"default" in Boot Camp isn't equally divided (although it is an option
button), only 5 gig is allocated to Windows by default. You can click
the 32 Gig button or click the divider on the graphic of the hard drive
and resize it manually.

I've installed XP on a lot of Macs and ran into my first "glitch" last
week. When I partitioned the drive using Boot Camp, I allowed it as the
default (fat32). That was the first time I did that, as usually I
choose NTFS.

When Windows Setup ran, installed the files and rebooted, I received a
Boot error. So I loaded the Windows CD again and this time chose NTFS
(Quick) and then loaded the files again. It succeeded. After Windows
boots on completion, insert your Leopard CD and the drivers for the Mac
will be loaded in XP. Then run Windows Update/MS Update.

As Macuser suggested, be sure you've selected the correct partition in
Windows Setup. It should be listed as C: and state Boot Camp.
