That sound which plays when you plug in a USB device plays every fifteen
or twenty seconds or so, and unless I mute the sound it just drives me out
of my mind. Is there a log somewhere which I can look at to see what
device XP is trying to install (unsuccessfully) so I can disable the
device or install it properly.

Oh You mean the BONK! BONK! I get that when my NOD32 anti-virus is through
scanning, scares the heck out me. Have you downloaded, and installed
anything recent to this sound bit starting up?

To get rid of the sound, open Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices,
and under Sounds tab, change "Device Connect" and "Device Disconnect" to
(None).

or to find out what XP is trying to connect, open up Control
Panel/system/hardware/device manager and see if a device is appearing
or disappearing and reappearing on the list.

Rather than simply disable the sound try to find out what's causing
it. It might presage something more serious...

One thing I've noticed about the USB disconnect bonk is that sometimes the
sound is made several minutes--sometimes as many as 10-15--AFTER the device
has been disconnected. What would be the cause of that?
