Bogus Update Message in Windows Photo Gallery

Every so often, when I start Windows Photo Gallery (on my Vista system), I
get a prompt telling me there is an new download available that will allow
me to read additional file types.

If I click on OK, I am taken to a web page telling me that the new file time
is a Adobe Digital Negative and the update is available from Adobe.

If I click on 'Adobe' I am taken to an Adobe web page telling me 'the codec
is not yet available'

I go through this every so often because there seems to be no way to know
for sure that it's the same error over and over. I suppose one of these
times there will be an update I want.

This has been going on for months now.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for posting in newsgroup.

According to the description, this is an expected behavior of Windows Photo
Gallery.

Analysis:
================

Based on the experience, when we want to read additional file types with
Windows Photo Gallery on Windows Vista box, it should not link to third
party website to get the new download patch.

This issue may occur because of deceptive software such as spyware, malware
or unauthorized adware that was installed on the problematic computer.

Suggestions:
=============

1. Please perform a clean boot and check if the issue still exists

Clean Boot Steps:

a. Click Start->Run...->type "msconfig" and press Enter
b. Click Services tab and select "Hide All Microsoft Services" and "Disable
All third party Services"
c. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
d. Click OK and choose Restart
e. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs

2. Please use antivirus software to perform a full scan of the system and
check if there is any spyware, malware, worm or Trojan on the problematic
computer. Some deceptive software can be removed by some antivirus
programs. However, not all antivirus companies detect or remove this
software because it is different from viruses. You may contact the
manufacturer of your antivirus program for more information about removing
deceptive software.

For additional information about how to contact the manufacturer of your
antivirus program, please refer to:

List of antivirus software vendors
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/49500/

3. Some non-Microsoft tools exist that may be able to remove the deceptive
software program. Some of the companies that provide spyware or
unauthorized adware removal programs include the following companies:

a. Ad-Aware

For more information about Ad-Aware, visit the following Lavasoft Web site:

Edition and CA Customer Online Store , visit the following Web site:
