My mother board has on-board LAN is this a RJ45 socket????
The reason I ask is because I want to link two PC's together and I think I
need to use the following cable:-

Crossover cables are the same as ethernet (Straight-through) cables, with
the minor difference being the send and receive wires are reversed on one
end.

In other words, yes, it is RJ45.

Temporarily remove the plastic phone plug from either the wall or the back
of your telephone.
That is an RJ-11 jack. If it fits perfectly into your onboard lan plug on
the back of your pc, then
you've got a homenetworking thingie.
If it goes in and you've got room to spare because the plug is bigger, then
its an RJ-45.
Don't forget to plug your telephone back in.

I doubpt you'd see a mobo with HPNA on it. You'd most likely need a
CNR card, if not a PCI card toget that, HPNA is so 2000 anyways.
